User (Session Id=1) Could Not Be Logged Off. Access Is Denied – Server 2008 R2

When trying to log off another user in Windows Server 2008 R2, you get:

User <<username>> (Session Id=1) could not be logged off. Access is denied.

The could not be logged off. Access is denied message is because although you may be logged in as an administrator, you aren’t running Task Manager in the administrator context (UAC).

To fix the Access is denied issue and log the user off, either:

  • Click the Processes tab in Task Manager and click Show processes from all users
  • Launch a command prompt as administrator (Right click -> Run as Administrator) and run the command taskmgr

After doing either of these options, you will then be able to log the user off without the could not be logged off. Access is denied message.
