Unable To Send Email To Distribution Group – Exchange 2010

If you are unable to send email to a distribution group from outside the organisation, but are able to send email to the distribution group internally on Exchange 2010, then you’ve probably gotRequire that all senders are authenticatedtickbox checked.

To fix this:

  1. Open the distribution group properties in Microsoft Exchange 2010’s Exchange Management Console -> Recipient Configuration -> Distribution Group
  2. Click on Mailflow Settings
  3. Select Message Delivery Restrictions and click Properties…
  4. Take the tick out of the Require that all senders are authenticated tickbox

This will allow unauthenticated users (those outside the organisation and not on the domain) to send email to the distribution group.

If you have a lot of distribution groups and you want them all to be able to recieve email from outside the organisation, run this PowerShell command to take the tick out for all distribution groups:

Get-DistributionGroup | where {$_.RequireSenderAuthenticationEnabled -eq $True} | Set-DistributionGroup -RequireSenderAuthenticationEnabled $False
