This Virtual Machine Appears To Be In Use Taking Ownership Failed – VMware Workstation

When trying to open a VM in VMware Workstation 9, you can get this warning:

This virtual machine appears to be in use

If this virtual machine is not in use, press the “Take Ownership” button to obtain ownership of it. Otherwise, press the “Cancel” button to avoid damaging it.

Configuration file:
<<Path to VM vmx file>>

When you try to take ownership, it fails with this error message:

Could not open virtual machine:
<<Path to VM vmx file>>

Taking ownership of this virtual machine failed.

The virtual machine is in use be an application on your host computer.

Configuration file: <<Path to VM vmx file>>.

To fix the unable to take ownership issue, navigate to the path of the vmx file and delete (you may wish to back them up) any files ending with the .lck extension. You should then be able to open and use the VM with the ownership issue.

  1. Thanks for the guidance. You’ve just saved me hours of work rebuilding an image I had just completed and was testing. It had been powered off but had not completely shut down. Thanks again!
