When logging onto Windows, you can get this error message:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted
This is typically caused by one of two reasons:
- Either the domain could not be contacted because of a networking issue preventing the client and domain communicating
- Or there is a problem with the computer account in Active Directory
Remove the network connection to the computer before logging on with a locally cached account (which may be a domain account) and troubleshoot any network connectivity issues.
If the computer can happily connect to the domain controllers with the correct ports, most likely there is a problem with the computer account in AD. Either reset the computer account in AD by right clicking it and resetting the password, or remove the computer from the domain and re-add it to fix the specified domain either does not exist error.
