The Report Server Cannot Access The Private Key For The Service Account In Reporting Services

After changing the password for the SQL Reporting Services account, I now have the following error when I visit the report manager URL:

The report server cannot access the private key for the service account. This key is used to decrypt the symmetric key that protects content in the report server database. This condition might occur after the password is reset for the report server service account. You must either restore a backup key or delete all encrypted content. Key not valid for use in specified state. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8009000B)

This is because the private key used to encrypt certain settings in SQL Reporting Services has changed. There are two possible fixes for this:

  1. In Reporting Services Configuration Manager, click Encryption Keys and delete the existing encryption keys and create new ones. This will lose all the subscription info on the reports and this will have to be recreated
  2. Restore a backup copy of the server, click Encryption Keys in Reporting Services Configuration Manager and Export the keys. In Reporting Services Configuration Manager on the current server, import the encryption keys you have just exported
