The Option To Configure Data Deduplication Is Greyed Out In Windows Server 2012

If you are trying to configure data deduplication in Microsoft Windows Server 2012, but find that the option to do so is greyed out, this may be because the Data Deduplication feature isn’t installed.

To install the data deduplication feature, go into Server Manager and expand the File and Storage Services feature set, select Data Deduplication and follow the wizard through to complete the install.

Other reasons that the option to configure Data Deduplication might be greyed out are:

  • The Data Deduplication service has stopped
  • The volume you are trying to deduplicate is the system volume (you can’t deduplicate the system volume)
  • The volume is not formatted with the NTFS file system (ReFS¬†does not support Data Deduplication¬†in Server 2012)
  • The volume is a mapped drive

Additionally, Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) will allow accessing data that is already deduplicated, but will not deduplicate new data.
