The Certificate For The Signer Of The Message Is Invalid – Server 2012

This seems like quite an unhelpful and generic message that Microsoft have built into Windows Server 2012, so I thought I’d publish a few common fixes for this error:

Windows Update Standalone Installer

Installer encountered an error: 0×80096002

The certificate for the signer of the message is invalid or not found.

You get this error when you are installing software onto Windows Server 2012 and it’s usually caused by one of the following things:

  • A software prerequisit is missing (such as .NET 3.5 or .NET 4)
  • The software you are trying to install, is available as a feature in Windows Server 2012
