TFTP Timeout Occurred, PXE-E32: TFTP Open Timeout – WDS / SCCM

When trying to network boot to a WDS / SCCM image, you get this message:

TFTP timeout occurred

PXE-E32: TFTP Open Timeout

This can be caused by a number of things. To fix the TFTP timeout occurred error, try any of the following on the PXE boot server:

  • Restart the Windows Deployment Server Service
  • Edit the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WDSServer\Parameters
Change the UdpPortPolicy to have a value of 0
Restart the Restart the Windows Deployment Server Service
  • Edit the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WDSServer\Parameters
Change the port range used with the UdpEndPort and UdpStartPort values
Restart the Restart the Windows Deployment Server Service
❗ You will find that the service won’t start if you choose ports that are already in use
  • Try this hotfix if your are running Windows Server 2008 R2 (:!: Only)
  • If the PXE boot server and DHCP server are on different servers, ensure that DHCP scope option 066 is configured correctly
  • Check that the PXE / TFTP server is running
