Program Compatibility Mode Settings Greyed Out

You may find that on the properties of a program or shortcut, the compatibility mode settings are greyed out. Compatibility mode settings can be greyed out if the compatibility mode settings have been already applied for all users.

To fix this, on the Compatibility tab of the properties of the program or shortcut, click Change settings for all users. Then deselect all the checkboxes and click OK.

If this doesn’t work, you can overide the compatibility mode settings in the registry by:

  1. Clicking Start -> Run
  2. Navigating to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers registry key
  3. Right clicking the Layers folder
  4. Clicking New -> String Value
  5. Giving the string value the path (including executable name) to the program you want to apply compatibility mode settings to
  6. Giving the value of the string to be the compatibility mode settings that you want to apply from the below list (seperated by a single space between each:
    • Pick one from the below list:
      • WIN95
      • WIN98
      • NT4SP5
      • WIN2000
      • WINXPSP2
      • WINSRV03SP1
    • Then any of the following:
      • 256COLOR
      • 640X480

❗ Each option selected should be in order as above ❗
