How To Make A Single Line Graph (Chart) In Excel 2010

I know that making line graphs (or charts) in Excel 2010 is easy, but it’s not obvious how to make a line graph with only a single line in Excel 2010 if you’re used to previous versions of Excel. This is because inserting a line graph in previous versions of Excel used to let you use a chart wizard and delete the unwanted series. In Excel 2010, there are no buttons or chart wizard (that I’ve found) to manipulate series in charts. Given that, this is how you create a line graph with only one line in Microsoft Excel 2010. There are actually two ways of doing this.

Creating a Line Graph and Deleting the Unwanted Series

This method produces a nice clean looking line graph with a single line.

  1. Make two columns of data (a table)
  2. Select the data in the table that you would like to use to populate your line graph
  3. Click on the insert tab in Excel 2010
  4. Under Charts click on the Line graph, then select the type of line graph you want
  5. On your newly created line graph, select the series you want to delete on the line graph and press delete on your keyboard

Creating a Scatter Graph and Joining the Dots

The next option to make a single line on a line graph in Excel 2010 is to make a scatter graph and join the dots. This is useful if you want to highlight specific points on your line graph.

  1. Make two columns of data (a table)
  2. Select the data in the table that you would like to use to populate your line graph
  3. Click on the insert tab in Excel 2010
  4. Under Charts click on the Scatter graph, then select the type of line graph you want
  5. On your newly created line graph, select the series you want to delete on the line graph and press delete on your keyboard
