Changing From Windows Server 2012 Core to GUI

Changing from Windows Server 2012 Core to the GUI version is a little less obvious than switching from GUI to Core, but there are several ways to switch from Core to GUI. You can do this with DISM, Server Manager or PowerShell.

To switch to GUI from Core with Server Manager, connect remotely to the Windows Server 2012 Core computer using Server Manager then install the WoW64 or User Interfaces and Infrastructure feature. The 2012 server will now be a GUI server instead of Core.

To switch to GUI from Core using the Windows PowerShell, use the following commands in order:

    1. Powershell
    2. Import-Module ServerManager
    3. Install-WindowsFeature Server-Gui-Mgmt-Infra, Server-Gui-Shell -Restart

These commands, start PowerShell, import the Server Manager module and installs the WoW64 or User Interfaces and Infrastructure feature.

To change from Windows Server 2012 Core to GUI using DISM, you can use the command:

Dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:ServerCore-FullServer /featurename:Server-GUI-Shell /featurename:Server-Gui-Mgmt
