Beer Bread Recipe

Today I made bread from beer instead of water. I used the beer yeast in conjunction with bakers yeast to make it more interesting. Here’s my beer bread recipe:

Recipe Ingredients

I used the following ingredients in my beer bread recipe:

  • 100ml of freshly brewed beer (so the yeast was still active)
  • 180ml of water
  • A teaspoon of bakers yeast
  • 3 tea spoons of sugar
  • 3.5 cups of flour
  • A teaspoon of garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil
  • 1 healthy pinch of citric acid (not essential to the flavour, just something I add to all my bread recipes to make the bread a bit healthier – I get the citric acid from a cheese making kit I have)

Recipe Directions

To make beer bread, I did the following:

  1. Mix bakers yeast with room temperature water
  2. Mix beer with 1 teaspoon of sugar
  3. Wait 1 minute for the yeast to hydrate in the water and start to get hungry
  4. Mix the remaining sugar with the water and wait 10 minutes or until the water starts to smell yeasty
  5. Mix the beer with the water
  6. Add the flour
  7. Add the garlic salt and citric acid. Note: Don’t let either of these touch the yeast, hide them on the flour, this will make the yeast healthier and bread rise better 😉
  8. Add the olive oil
  9. Kneed the dough and leave it somewhere warm to rise for a few hours
  10. Kneed the dough and put it in a bread tin
  11. Cook the bread until done (Sorry, I don’t have the cooking times and temperatures because I use a bread making machine 😳 )

You might want to try experimenting with different types of beer and see what makes the nicest beer bread. Personally, I used a Marzen / Oktoberfest beer because that’s what I had available. Beer bread might be tastier with a stout, bock or some other beer style?
