Beef And Ale Pie Recipe

I guarantee that this will be the best beef and ale pie that you’ll ever have. Here’s the recipe for my beef and ale pie.

  • Beef (diced)
  • Ale (the importance is to pick a really malty ale. Grab a real ale, rather than a Heineken or a mainstream beer)
  • Potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Peas
  • Gravy or beef stock
  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Mushrooms (optional)
  • Rosemary or other herbs (optional)
  • Salt
  • Cheese
  • Flaky puff pastry
  • Spinach, silverbeet, cabbage or whatever your favourite leafy greens are
  • Butter

Recipe Directions

  1. Sear the beef in a frying pan so it’s cooked on the outside
  2. Put the beef into a slow cooker and add your real ale until it is at least covered (if it’s not covered, it will dry out and burn)
  3. Add salt, gravy or beef stock, garlic and optional herbs (I sometimes put rosemary in)
  4. Cook for at least 2 hours
  5. Chop the carrots and potatoes, then boil until cooked
  6. Chop the onions and fry in butter or oil until cooked
  7. Add peas, onions, carrots and potatoes to beef / ale mixture and stir
  8. Smear butter around a large pie pan (so the pastry doesn’t stick)
  9. Add a layer of pastry to the pie pan
  10. Put a layer of spinach on the pastry
  11. Pour the beef / ale mixture onto the spinach
  12. Grate some cheddar style cheese onto the beef / ale mix
  13. Add the top layer of pastry to the pie
  14. Put some holes in the top layer of the pastry in the center
  15. Cook at 180 degrees Celsius for 25-35 minutes, or until cooked
